The current status of numerical simulations of galaxy formation is reviewed. After a short description of the main numerical simulation techniques, three sample applications illustrate how numerical simulations have provided deeper insight in the galaxy formation process and how they have illuminated success and failure of the hierarchical galaxy formation paradigm: N-body simulations demonstrate that the density profiles of dark matter halos that form in hierarchical clustering scenarios...

A Sermon by Pastor Israel Steinmetz on 01/12/2019 This is Part 3 of the series. I have news for you…Times have changed and joining God’s mission requires becoming a Church “With” the community and not just in the community. An example of this is how the chameleon changes his skin color, without ever changes his species. In fact, it is the nature of the chameleon to change for the environment it is in. it is in the manor that the Christian needs to changes their approach. Without...

We discuss families of meromorphic functions $f_h$ obtained from single functions $f$ by the re-scaling process $f_h(z)=h^{-\alpha}f(h+h^{-\beta}z)$ generalising Yosida's process $f_h(z)=f(h+z)$. The main objective is to obtain information on the value distribution of the generating functions $f$ themselves. Among the most prominent generalised Yosida functions are first, second and fourth Painlev\'e transcendents. The Yosida class contains all limit functions of generalised Yosida...

The ongoing large spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way such as SEGUE and RAVE have enabled us to take a fresh look at the structure of the Galactic thin and thick disks, and how their structure fits within the framework of structure formation via hierarchical clustering. In this article I will summarize some recent results mainly based in the RAVE survey with respect to the structure of the Galactic disks, their possible origin as well as indications of substructure and asymmetries.

The relation between high redshift galaxies and QSO absorption systems is discussed in the context of hierarchical galaxy formation. It is demonstrated that imprints of the reionization history of the universe are detectable in the $b$-parameter distribution of the \Lya forest at redshifts two to four, favoring models in which hydrogen and helium are reionized simultaneously at or before redshift five by a quasar-like spectrum of UV photons. Hydrodynamical simulations including star formation,...

I review recent progress in numerically simulating the formation and evolution of galaxies in hierarchically clustering universes. Special emphasis is given to results based on high-resolution gas dynamical simulations using the N-body hardware integrator GRAPE. Applications address the origin of the spin of disk galaxies, the structure and kinematics of damped Lyman-alpha systems, and the origin of galaxy morphology and of galaxy scaling laws.

In a recent paper, Aimo Hinkkanen and Ilpo Laine proved that the transcendental solutions to Painleve's second differential equation w"=a+zw+w^3 have either order of growth 3 or else 3/2. We complete this result by proving that there exist no sub-normal solutions (order of growth 3/2) other than the so-called Airy solutions.

The current status of numerical simulations of the formation of galaxies is reviewed. Success and failure of modeling galaxies at low and high redshift is demonstrated using a variety of examples, such as the Tully-Fisher relation, the appearance of high-redshift galaxies and the kinematics of damped Lya systems. The relationship between the clustering properties of high-z galaxies and the present generation of galaxies is emphasized.

We present numerical simulations of galaxy formation, one of the most challenging problems in computational astrophysics. The key point in such simulations is the efficient solution of the N--body problem. If the gas of a galaxy is treated by means of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), the hydrodynamic equations can be reduced to a form similar to that of the N--body problem. A straightforward implementation requires a computational effort $\propto N^2$, making it prohibitively expensive to...

A combined N--body/SPH code is presented which benefits from the high speed of the special purpose hardware GRAPE (GRAvity PipE). Besides gravitational forces, GRAPE also returns the list of neighbours and can, therefore, be used to speed up the hydrodynamical part, too. After the interaction list has been passed, density, pressure forces, propagation and interpolation of particles etc. are calculated on the front end, a 50 MHz SUN SPARC 10. In order to combine SPH and GRAPE, possible...

I review the current state of our understanding of the galaxy formation and evolution process from the modeler's perspective. With the advent of the cold dark matter model and the support of fast computers and advanced simulation techniques, there has been considerable progress in explaining the growth of structure on the largest scales and in reproducing some of the basic properties of galaxies and their evolution with redshift. However, many properties of galaxies are still only poorly...

Based on the so-called re-scaling method, we will give a detailed description of the solutions to the Hamiltonian system (\ref{Hsystem}) below, which was discovered only recently by Kecker, and is strongly related to Painleve's fourth differential equation. In particular, the problem to determine those fourth Painleve transcendents with positive Nevanlinna deficiency $\delta(0,w)$, is completely resolved.

New simulations are presented which investigate the formation of smaller groups of galaxies in a CDM like universe. The simulations follow the evolution of dark matter and gas and are performed with an SPH code adapted for the special-purpose hardware GRAPE. The mass resolution in the baryonic component is 5 10^6 Msol, the spatial resolution is 1.5 kpc. A sufficiently large volume is simulated in order to accurately include the tidal field and the mass inflow. The mass resolution enables us to...
